One small step for you, one giant leap toward an organized home. Try this advice from Ace’s Design Experts to get organized.
Closet Encounters
Find space in bedroom closets.
- Install a closet organizer or double-hang clothing rods.
- If you haven’t worn it for two years, donate it.
- Stack shelves on the floor for shoes, purses and bags
- Hang scarves and belts from hooks.
- Arrange clothes by color or type. They’ll be easier to find.
Outer Space
Organize your entryway closet or mudroom area.
- Install oversized hooks for bags and coats you use every day.
- Sort hats, gloves and accessories in labeled bins or baskets. Store them under a bench or on a closet shelf.
- Keep muddy shoes separated on boot trays.
Clutter Countdown
3-2-1 DeClutter!
- Start with a clean slate by empthying the space.
- Set up your organization system (shelves, boxes, bins, drawers, etc.,).
- Bring items back in individually.
Ground Control
Get Items off the floor.
- Create a wall of storage. Hang shelves floor to ceiling.
- Hang shelving 8′ high all the way around a laundry room, garage, kid’s room, or office. Your storage will be accessible but out of the way.
- “Limit storage containers to one or two materials or colors. It keeps things from looking pieced together and makes your storage solution look like an internal design element” says Nathan Fischer.
Un-Lost in Space
Find simple ways to keep little things in place.
- Set decorative trays on an ottoman, counter or bureau to contain magazines and books.
- Section off drawers with trays and cups to sort tiny items like jewelry or office supplies.
- Pegboard is fantastic for organizing basements, garages, and laundry rooms.
- Wheeled carts and mesh bags keep toys out of the way when playtimes over.
Space Stations
Create a place for everything.
- Always have a place for mail. And place a recycle bin nearby so junk mail won’t end up all over.
- Buy storage containers in one color for a unified look. Use them in a cubby storage system to hide paperwork and supplies.
- Add shallow shelving inside a large cabinet or pantry door. Store smaller items there that you need easy access to.
